But it’s in service of the utterly wrong genre. That’s not to say Kingdom of the Dead is an ugly game. ‘Newspaper’ brightened the whites up somewhat, but that doesn’t help when much of the levels are pure black anyway. They really offer no other radical changes to the game’s look. There are options available to adjust the colour palette, but they really are just presenting you with different tints. In fact, it often strains the eye, especially in the Crypt stage that is usually darker than a coal miner’s ass crack. Unfortunately, Kingdom of the Dead just doesn’t have the same vibrancy, it doesn’t grab the eye in the same way. In fact, it still holds up today, and it’s coming on 13 years old. The balance of black and white was perfect and really made both shades stand out. It uses a lot of black shadows and not a whole lot of whites or greys, so everything just blurs into the scenery.Ī great example of this art style would be Madworld on the Wii. It has oppressive, Doom 3 levels of dark without even the benefit of a flashlight. The issue with Kingdom of the Dead is that they perhaps over-commit to the visual style without thinking of how it would feel to play. It feels like a series of disparate throwback styles that all appeal firmly to my ‘old as fuck’ ass. The aesthetic mixes that post-Sin City graphic novel look, with an energetic ’90s techno sound, in service of a mid-’90s FPS playstyle. In your level select hub, you can actually choose from a selection of tracks from the game to enjoy – and enjoy I did! It brought to mind music you’d hear in the late ’80s but amped up. The music really is great, very retro in its style. It was a feature of the combat that never got dull. I can tell you now, I always tried to make these guys do their best impersonation of a champagne bottle. The main creatures you will encounter are simple ghouls and are constructed in segments, so you can actually shoot/hack off limbs or even pop off their heads if you hit the right spots. You have a handful of weapons at your disposal, including a sword when you are running low on ammunition. This, in itself, is a pleasant surprise after several generations dominated by Call of Duty style cover-based combat (we talk all about our issues with COD in Episode 11). It’s a straightforward run and gun style. The gameplay style is owed to the original DOOM and the classics it inspired. The game is cast in blacks and whites, approximating a hand-drawn style. If it feels a bit Hellboy, it is, but it has a look all its own which is one selling point in Kingdom of Dead’s favour. Grant to visit different locations and take down the reanimated dead and other demonic forces. Using his new military strength, Death waged war on the overworld. Death’s army has grown to unthinkable levels due to the massive casualties on both sides. The game is set in the aftermath of the War of 1812, a conflict between the United States of America and Great Britain that spanned three years. Pretty standard career progression there. In Kingdom of the Dead, you play a professor turned Army General, called Agent Chamberlain, who is now working for a secret government program known as GATEKEEPER, whose primary purpose is to defeat Death and his armies.
